The AI Coding Stack for Developers (2026)

Accelerate your development workflow with these AI coding assistants. Tested across full-stack work, from prototyping to shipping production features.

Why This Stack

These four tools cover the full developer loop: autocomplete in the editor, agentic refactors across files, UI prototyping, and a general-purpose thinking partner. They're complementary, not redundant.

The Stack

1. Inline Autocomplete → GitHub Copilot ($10/mo)

The cheapest, most reliable inline suggestion engine. Live in any editor.

2. Agentic IDE → Cursor ($20/mo)

Multi-file refactors, codebase Q&A, and chat-driven edits. Cursor's Composer is the killer feature.

3. UI Prototyping → v0.dev ($0–$20/mo)

Spit out React + Tailwind UIs from a sketch or prompt. Paste straight into your codebase.

4. Thinking Partner → ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo)

For architecture decisions, regex puzzles, and rubber-ducking. Outside your editor on purpose.

Total: ~$50/mo

| Tool | Cost | Job | | --- | --- | --- | | GitHub Copilot | $10 | Inline autocomplete | | Cursor | $20 | Codebase-aware edits | | v0.dev | $0–$20 | UI prototyping | | ChatGPT Plus | $20 | Architecture / debugging |

What I Don't Use

  • Multiple chat models in the IDE. Pick one. Switching costs more than it saves.
  • Tab-completion shootouts. Copilot is fine. Stop tweaking.
  • Local LLMs for daily work. Great for privacy use cases, slow for daily coding.

When to Drop a Tool

If you're using Cursor heavily, you can probably drop Copilot — Cursor's tab model is competitive. That cuts the stack to ~$40/mo.
